Do I need qualifications to perform ruqya on others?

There is no formal certificate or ijazah system for ruqya in Islam. That said, treating other people carries responsibility that self-ruqya does not, and there is a sensible minimum.

The minimum

  • Correct aqidah, so that you never drift toward practices involving shirk.
  • Accurate recitation of the core protective verses.
  • Enough fiqh to know the rules on gender, contact and privacy.
  • The honesty to say I do not know and to refer someone onward.
  • The judgement to recognise when a problem is medical or psychological and needs a doctor, not a longer recitation.

That last point is the one most often neglected. A practitioner who cannot tell the difference between spiritual affliction and untreated illness will cause real harm, however sincere his intention.

Start with family. Build slowly. Stay connected to people more experienced than you.
