How should I bathe with ruqya water safely?
Use comfortably warm water. Never hot.
Some material in this field instructs bathing in water that is nearly scalding, on the reasoning that jinn are made of fire and heat harms them. This instruction causes burns, and it should not be followed.
Water above roughly 45 degrees Celsius damages skin. Children burn faster and at lower temperatures than adults, and scald injuries from spiritual treatment are documented in hospitals. There is no prophetic basis for extreme heat, and no benefit that offsets an actual injury.
Safe method
- Test the temperature on the inside of your wrist first, as you would for a baby's bath
- Say bismillah, and ask Allah for healing
- Pour the water over your head and body
- Do not rinse immediately; let it dry or pat dry
- Repeat daily for the period advised
For children, run the bath yourself and test it every time. Never delegate this, and never let a practitioner determine the temperature.
Cold water is also acceptable. Comfort is not a compromise here.
