Can women perform ruqya?
Yes, without restriction. Women recited over their families in the earliest generations, and a mother reciting over her own children is one of the most natural and effective forms of the practice.
Guidelines on gender
- A woman may treat her husband, her children, her mahram relatives and other women freely.
- Where a practitioner treats someone of the opposite gender, a mahram or family member should be present for the entire session, with the door open.
- There should be no physical contact. Recitation carries the treatment; touch adds nothing and creates obvious risk.
- Both parties dress modestly, and a woman being treated should be fully covered.
A note worth taking seriously: a significant share of abuse cases in this field involve a male practitioner alone with a female patient. Never accept a closed-door session with a stranger, however respected he is.
