The Signs of Sihr: A Complete and Honest Guide

Lists of sihr symptoms circulate widely, and most are broad enough that anyone reading them will recognise themselves. This guide covers what practitioners actually look for, and just as importantly, what those signs do not prove.

Search for the symptoms of sihr and you will find lists that include fatigue, headaches, bad dreams, marital tension and low motivation. Read one at three in the morning while worried and you will find yourself ticking every box.

That experience is not evidence. It is what happens when a broad list meets an anxious reader, and it is the reason so many people arrive at a practitioner convinced of something that is not true.

So this guide does two things at once: it sets out what practitioners look for, and it is equally clear about what each sign fails to establish.

The signs, grouped

Affecting relationships

A sudden reversal of feeling toward a spouse with nothing behind it. Physical aversion where there was affection. Small matters escalating into serious conflict. Each person seeming reasonable apart, and hostile together.

The Quran names marital separation directly in Surah Al-Baqarah, which is why this category carries more weight than most.

Affecting work and provision

Opportunities collapsing at the final stage, repeatedly, across years and unrelated situations. Money arriving and disappearing into unexpected costs. Being passed over consistently despite being qualified.

Affecting the body

Chest tightness, pressure on the head, moving pain, numbness, heaviness. Symptoms investigated by doctors that return nothing.

Affecting worship

Prayer becoming heavy. Sleepiness arriving the moment recitation begins. Reluctance to enter a masjid in someone who used to go willingly.

Affecting sleep and dreams

Recurring dreams of snakes, graveyards, falling, or being pursued. Waking exhausted. Difficulty sleeping between maghrib and midnight specifically.

During recitation

A distinct reaction when Quran is recited: headache, nausea, agitation, weeping, or a strong urge to leave.

What the pattern needs to look like

No single sign means anything. What practitioners treat as significant is a combination of four features:

  • Clustering. Several signs together, not one in isolation.
  • Sudden onset. A clear before and after, with nothing in between to explain it.
  • Absence of cause. Nothing happened. No argument, no diagnosis, no loss, no change of circumstance.
  • Persistence. It does not lift, and it does not respond to the things that would normally help.

Remove any one of those and the case weakens considerably.

What has to be ruled out first

This is where most people skip ahead, and it is the part that matters most.

Medical causes. Thyroid disorders produce fatigue, low mood, weight change and mental fog. Anaemia produces exhaustion and breathlessness. Vitamin D deficiency, which is extremely common, produces aches, tiredness and low mood. Diabetes, sleep apnoea, and a long list of ordinary conditions produce most of what appears on any sihr symptom list.

These are diagnosable with a blood test. Get the test.

Psychological causes. Depression and anxiety disorders produce apathy, sleep disturbance, chest tightness, aversion to activity and loss of interest. Bereavement produces all of it. Burnout produces all of it. These are common, real, and treatable, and treating them as spiritual affliction can allow serious illness to run for years.

Practical causes. Debt. An unhappy marriage that nobody has acknowledged. A job that is grinding someone down. Isolation. Chronic lack of sleep. These are unglamorous explanations, and they are usually the right ones.

Spiritual causes that are not sihr. Abandoned prayer, persistent sin and distance from the Quran produce heaviness of heart, aversion to worship and a sense of directionlessness. This is described extensively in classical Islamic literature. It requires repentance, not treatment.

The cost of getting it wrong

It is worth being direct about this, because the error is rarely harmless.

People spend years pursuing spiritual treatment for a thyroid condition. Depression deepens while somebody recites. Families fracture because a practitioner hinted at who might be responsible. Savings disappear to someone promising a final session that will resolve everything.

And there is a quieter cost. Someone who believes their life is under spiritual attack often stops taking practical action. They stop applying for jobs, stop working on the marriage, stop going to appointments. The belief itself becomes the obstacle.

Where this leaves you

Sihr is real. The Quran establishes it and the Prophet, peace be upon him, was affected by it. Denying it entirely means discarding clear texts.

But it is far less common than the anxiety around it suggests, and it operates only within what Allah permits.

Investigate the ordinary explanations properly. Strengthen your prayer and your adhkar. Recite over yourself daily. Give it time. Most people who do these four things find their situation improves, and never need to answer the question at all.
