Is It Sihr or Something Else? The Question Almost Nobody Asks First
Practitioners see far more people who do not have sihr than people who do. This is the diagnostic process that should happen before anyone reaches that conclusion, and an honest account of what goes wrong when it is skipped.
The book this series draws on contains a section devoted to confusions: cases that resemble sihr and are not. It is one of the shortest sections in a long book, and it should probably be the longest.
Because the central problem in this field is not that sihr does not exist. It is that it is diagnosed far too readily, by people with no means of ruling anything out, for problems with ordinary and often urgent explanations.
Work through these in order
1. Medical
Start here, always, and complete it properly rather than treating it as a box to tick.
Thyroid disorders produce fatigue, low mood, weight change, hair loss, mental fog and irritability. Hypothyroidism in particular is common, easily missed, and reproduces almost the entire sihr symptom list.
Anaemia produces exhaustion, breathlessness, palpitations and dizziness. Vitamin D deficiency, extremely common in northern climates and among people who cover, produces aches, fatigue and low mood. Vitamin B12 deficiency produces tingling, numbness, fatigue and cognitive symptoms.
Sleep apnoea produces exhaustion, headaches, irritability, poor concentration and non-restorative sleep. Diabetes produces fatigue, thirst, blurred vision and numbness. Chronic pain conditions produce moving unexplained pain.
Every one of these is identified through standard testing. Ask your doctor for a full blood panel including thyroid function, iron, vitamin D and B12. Describe all symptoms, including the ones that feel unrelated.
And be clear about the meaning of a normal result. It rules those conditions out. It does not establish that something spiritual is happening.
2. Psychological
Depression produces apathy, sleep disturbance, loss of interest, chest tightness, aversion to activity and social withdrawal. Anxiety disorders produce chest tightness, breathlessness, sense of dread, tingling and derealisation, which is the feeling of being detached from reality that people frequently describe as being not themselves.
Post-traumatic stress produces nightmares, hypervigilance, flashbacks and avoidance. Bereavement produces almost everything on any symptom list, and grief has no timetable.
Seeking help for these is not a failure of faith. This needs stating because the belief that it is keeps a great many people unwell. The Prophet, peace be upon him, sought treatment and instructed others to. A mind is part of a body.
3. Practical
The unglamorous explanations, which are usually the right ones.
Debt produces a level of chronic stress that affects sleep, mood, relationships and physical health. An unhappy marriage that nobody has named produces heaviness, aversion and conflict. A job that is grinding someone down produces apathy and dread. Isolation produces almost everything.
Chronic sleep deprivation, which is close to universal among parents of small children, produces cognitive symptoms indistinguishable from serious illness.
4. Spiritual, but not sihr
Abandoned prayer, persistent sin, and distance from the Quran produce heaviness of heart, aversion to worship, loss of direction, and a sense that something has gone wrong that cannot be located.
This is described extensively in classical literature. Ibn al-Qayyim wrote at length on how sins darken and harden the heart until worship becomes burdensome.
This is common, and it is often the whole answer. The remedy is repentance and return, not treatment. It is also the explanation people least want, because it asks something of them.
5. Trial
Allah tests those He loves. Hardship is not evidence of attack, and it is not evidence of divine displeasure. The Prophet, peace be upon him, endured the death of his children, the loss of his wife and his uncle in one year, exile, and physical assault.
Some difficulty is simply what life contains. Reaching for a supernatural cause can be a way of refusing that.
Only then
Where all five have been genuinely examined, and the pattern remains sudden, unexplained, clustered and persistent, sihr becomes a reasonable consideration.
That is a much narrower set of cases than the volume of people seeking treatment suggests.
What skipping this costs
Serious conditions go untreated. Thyroid disease, diabetes and depression are all progressive when ignored, and all straightforward when addressed.
Children lose the years in which support would have transformed their outcomes.
Families are torn apart by accusations. This is one of the most common and least discussed harms in this entire field. Somebody suspects a sister-in-law, a mother-in-law, a rejected suitor. It is voiced. It cannot be unvoiced. Relationships that took decades to build end over a suspicion with nothing behind it.
Money disappears. Families have spent life savings on treatment for conditions a blood test would have identified.
And agency disappears with it. Someone who believes their life is under attack stops taking practical action, and the decline that follows is read as further proof.
The balanced position
Sihr is real. The Quran establishes it plainly and the Prophet, peace be upon him, was affected by it. Denying it means discarding clear texts.
It is also uncommon relative to how often it is invoked, and it operates only within what Allah permits.
Investigate properly. Pray consistently. Recite daily. Be patient. Most people who do these four things find their situation resolves, and the question never has to be answered at all.
