What Is a Ruqyah Session?

A Ruqyah session is an Islamic religious and spiritual practice centered on Qur'anic recitation and authentic supplication. The practitioner does not have independent power to heal and should not claim to diagnose medical or psychiatric conditions.

Beginning the Session

A session may begin with a brief discussion of the client's concerns and an explanation of what the session will involve. Clients should be free to ask questions and should never be pressured to disclose unnecessary sensitive information.

Qur'anic Recitation and Supplication

The central activity is permissible Qur'anic recitation and authentic dua. A client may listen, recite along, or perform self-Ruqyah where appropriate.

What Should Not Happen

  • No diagnosis of medical or psychiatric conditions.

  • No claims of certain knowledge about the unseen.

  • No accusations against relatives or other identifiable people.

  • No striking, choking, restraint, burning, painful pressure, or coercive procedures.

  • No advice to stop or change prescribed medication.

  • No promises or guarantees about a particular outcome or timeline.

Physical Contact

Ruqyah does not require physical contact. If any physical contact is proposed, the client should be told what is proposed and may decline it without affecting their access to the religious service. Consent and appropriate boundaries should always be respected.

Online Sessions

An online session may be conducted through an appropriate communication platform. The practitioner can recite Qur'an and make dua while the client participates from their own location. The session remains a religious practice and does not become medical care because it is conducted remotely.

After the Session

A practitioner may encourage continued salah, Qur'an, authentic adhkar, dua, and other permissible religious practices. Where a health concern requires professional attention, the client should be encouraged to seek it.

A Healthy Standard for Ruqyah

A responsible session should leave the client more informed about authentic Islamic practice, not more frightened or dependent. The goal is to encourage reliance upon Allah, sound worship, safety, and responsible decision-making.
