Protecting Your Family: Children, Marriage and Home

The Sunnah gives specific protection for the people and places closest to us. Here is the complete practice for a household, and an honest word about the anxiety that can do more damage than what it fears.
Most people become interested in protection because of someone else. A child who will not sleep. A marriage that has cooled. A house that feels wrong.
The Sunnah addresses all three specifically, and the practice is simple enough that any parent can establish it this week.
It also contains a caution that belongs at the start rather than the end: fear of these things, held badly, damages families more than the things themselves.
Children
The prophetic dua
The Prophet, peace be upon him, sought refuge for Hasan and Husayn with words asking Allah, by His perfect words, to protect them from every devil, every harmful creature, and every envious eye. He noted that Ibrahim, peace be upon him, used the same words for his sons.
Say it over each child by name, nightly.
The nightly routine
Recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas over them, blowing into cupped hands and wiping over them
Recite Ayat al-Kursi
Say the dua above
Make your own dua for them, in your own words
Three minutes, at bedtime, as part of the routine they already have. Children come to expect it and often ask for it.
Through the day
Say masha Allah, tabarak Allah when you admire them. Out loud, so they grow up hearing it as ordinary speech rather than as a ritual against something
Say bismillah over their food
Teach them the short surahs as soon as they can learn them
Teach relatives and friends the admiration habit, warmly. People adopt it gladly once they understand it
On display
Be thoughtful about how much you put publicly, particularly online where admiration is constant, untracked, and comes from people you will never meet.
This is a judgement call rather than a rule. Yaqub, peace be upon him, told his sons to enter the city by separate gates, and classical commentary reads this as protection against the eye. Reasonable discretion, not secrecy.
Marriage
Marriage attracts envy, and the Quran names marital separation as an effect of sihr specifically. It is also the relationship most often damaged by suspicion about these things, which is the part worth attending to.
Spiritual
Pray together, even occasionally. It changes the texture of a marriage
Recite over each other. This is Sunnah, needs no practitioner, and takes two minutes
Both recite Ayat al-Kursi and the three surahs before sleeping
Say bismillah before intimacy, with the dua seeking refuge from shaytan
Say masha Allah about each other, and about the marriage
Practical, which carries equal weight
Address problems while they are small. Most marital damage is accumulated small grievances that nobody voiced
Do not display the marriage publicly. Anniversary posts, gifts, holidays. This invites exactly the unguarded admiration that carries risk, and it serves no purpose either way
Keep in-law involvement within limits, kindly and clearly. A large share of what gets attributed to sihr is interference nobody has been willing to name
Both see a doctor if either becomes withdrawn or irritable. Depression flattens affection and produces exactly the sudden inexplicable coldness that gets attributed elsewhere. It is common and treatable
The thing that ends marriages
Never voice suspicion about a relative.
This deserves the emphasis. More marriages in this field have been damaged by an accusation of sihr than by sihr. Someone suspects a mother-in-law, a sister-in-law, a rejected suitor. It gets said once, in a difficult moment, and it cannot be unsaid.
Whatever you suspect, keep it entirely between you and Allah. If it is true, Allah knows. If it is not, you have destroyed a family for nothing.
The home
The practice
Surah Al-Baqarah, regularly. Recited or played. The Prophet said shaytan flees the house where it is recited
Pray voluntary prayers at home, not only at the masjid. He instructed that homes not be turned into graveyards
Bismillah on entering, when eating, and when closing up at night
Close doors and cover vessels at nightfall
Recited water sprinkled through the rooms, if the house feels heavy. You can prepare this yourself in ten minutes
Remove images of animate beings, and dogs kept without need, since angels do not enter such houses
What happens inside it
This matters more than any of the above and is mentioned least.
Persistent backbiting, unresolved anger, severed family ties, abandoned prayers. These affect a household directly, and no amount of recited water addresses them.
A home where the prayers are prayed on time, where people speak well of others, and where family ties are kept is protected by everything the sources actually specify.
The physical check
Fit a carbon monoxide detector. It causes headaches, nausea, confusion, dread, and at higher concentrations hallucination and a sensed presence. Symptoms lift when you leave the house and return when you come back, which is precisely the pattern described as an affected home. It is odourless, and it kills whole families.
Also check damp, ventilation, and plumbing. Damp is usually worst in specific rooms, and that room-specific pattern is often read as a room being affected.
The caution
Here is the part that matters most, and it applies to everything above.
Some families become so preoccupied with these dangers that the preoccupation becomes the problem. Children are hidden and not photographed. Visitors are treated as threats. Every illness is investigated for spiritual causes. Relatives are quietly suspected and gradually avoided.
Children absorb this completely. A child raised in a household where invisible malice is a constant topic learns that the world is dangerous and that people cannot be trusted. That is a lasting cost, and it is paid for protection they mostly did not need.
And the suspicion corrodes families from the inside. Extended families have thinned out over years, not through any accusation being made, but through a slow withdrawal from
people who were never told why.
What proportion looks like
Recite over your children nightly, calmly, as part of an ordinary bedtime
Say masha Allah as a habit of gratitude, not as a defensive measure
Keep the adhkar, and then think about something else
Do not discuss jinn or sihr in front of children
Do not investigate every illness spiritually. See a doctor
Assume the best of your relatives
The protection is meant to free you from worrying about this, not to give you a subject to worry about. Establish it, trust it, and get on with your life.
That is what it is for.
