How do I know if a raqi is genuine?

A sincere practitioner is recognisable by what he refuses to do. Look for these seven markers:

• He recites the Quran openly, aloud, in a way you can hear and verify.
• He invokes Allah alone, with no unfamiliar names or coded phrases.
• He does not claim to know the future, your past, or hidden matters.
• He does not ask for your mother's name, your date of birth, a photograph, or an item of your clothing.
• He gives you nothing to wear, bury, or carry.
• He encourages your prayer, repentance and daily adhkar.
• He tells you to continue any medical treatment you are receiving.

A genuine raqi hands responsibility back to you. A charlatan makes you dependent on him.

If you are unsure, pray istikhara and take a knowledgeable person with you to the first session.
